Michele Gandin started as a journalist and then, in 1941, he began working with Vittorio De Sica as an assistant director. He has intensely worked on documentaries till 1973. In 1969, he directed a short film titled Gli esclusi (The excluded), produced by Nexus with the pictures taken in 1956 by D’Alessandro in the psychiatric hospital of Nocera Inferiore. Both the film and the book – published in the same year – became one of the instruments of the struggle for the closing down of all psychiatric hospitals. The screaming of the then excluded talks to us today to express the voice of the excluded inhabiting our present.
