He now lives and works in Naples. In the Seventies he used to be a painter, but then he started his research and production of electronic images at the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel in Paris. Since 1981, he has been working with digital photography, building up a collection of subtle portraits of many different sizes; their main feature is to be never visible in their entirety and mainly focussed on the expression of the person portrayed, hence of the most evasive part of the self. His portraits start to appear in the international photography magazines and in European and American museums.
Since Nadar, portrait means a deep interaction between subject and object. By using a computer and overtaking the classic triangle eye-nose-mouth, Thorel dives in the natural environment of digital elaboration, aiming at a slow and dilated flaking process. They are black and white picture; where light sometimes slides on the net of lines, but also withdraws from it. There, on the surface, apparitions of the Neapolitan ghosts seem sometimes to materialize into the spectator’s eyes. The ghosts of the Neapolitan popular tradition - la bella ‘Mbriana, the American seaman, the Monaciello - can only live if there’s a relation with the viewers who have to activate and adjust their sight to perceive them.
