Oreste Pipolo’s third eye is not only the eye of a photographer who created the ‘wedding genre’ in Naples, which is for sure the most in-demand genre of his studio in via Carbonara. His third eye is sulphureous and hyperactive, it builds up a heavenly and exaggerated hell, baroque and kitsch, farcical and real, visionary but tangible - photographically speaking. He excited other photographers’ curiosity, such as Ferdinando Scianna's and Francesco Paolo Cito's, and gave inspiration to Matteo Garrone for a documentary film and to Marco Bellocchio for his movie “Il Regista di Matrimoni” (The Wedding Director). He moved from black and white to colours, from analogical to digital while capturing at least three generations of Neapolitan weddings. His photography puts together an anthropological repertoire; it investigates social environments and traditions and melts universal rituals mixing together theatrical, photographic, cinematographic and artistic practices. Those brides made of flesh and laces seem part of the sole Neapolitan universe, yet, in the meantime, they bring us back to the commedia dell’arte, to Rubens’ sensual pleasures, to Neapolitan b-movies, and to the composite photographs by Joel Peter Witkin.
