Thomas Struth is one of the major exponents of the so-called Düsseldorf School and, as others photographers coming from the same artistic and academic backgrounds, he portrays urban landscapes, anonymous architectures and makes large size prints. Since 1978 he started to photograph town-life spaces, among which the museums, that became one of his preferred sceneries, because they represent inter-action sites between people and art. Compared to his previews photos, in this cycle of works the human presence takes on a prevailing role. The artist organizes the image as an interactive mechanism, which focuses now the masterpiece, now who admires the meaning of it through the historical periods. In Uffizi the two women-visitors are subjects completely anonymous, and this feature is emphasized by the size dis-proportion between them and the paints they admire. The image is devided by the intersection line of two adjoining walls, as it was a diptyc, where women act as fastener. The share of the cross visible in the framing as well as the presence of a third, secondary figure permits us to guess the continuation of the image beyonde the frame limit.
