At the age of fifteen he began working as a wedding photographer assistant. He got interested in reportage and approached the dark room working as a printer for the historical archive Parisio. Long before Gomorrah, he led Roberto Saviano through a sort of journey in the waste land, he took him to Scampia, together they attended camorrists’ weddings and his photos went along with the first author’s articles written for the “Manifesto”. Spada chose not the follow the daily spot news, but to disassemble and organize stories through photographs. His black and white straight forward pictures show a hurting Naples, without any distance or celebration with wild and hyperrealistic details; his editing is tight, original and crude. Spada focuses on reality and the plain truth, his reportages provoke international response, he tells the story of fighting dogs or the story of Francesco, a man who is under house arrest in the area of “Quartieri spagnoli”. His photography means deepening, participation and knowledge without any kind of control. Mastiffs is the football supporters’ group created in August 1991 that dominates the Neapolitan scene. When you are a part of it, you choose a lifestyle and forget your identity: you only belong to it. A match is another life: a lawyer and a felon, a student and a father are all prisoners and gladiators who travel through the arena escorted by riot policemen while singing the war song “kill us”.
