Raffaela Mariniello observes everything with a photographic approach. Her work is a sort of installation totally dedicated to Naples: a deserted city which can be observed and inhabited via her images. For many years, she captured the no man’s land that surrounds the town: the suburbs. Bagnoli and the Phlegraean Fields, San Giovanni and the towns on the Mount Vesuvius slopes, the harbor and an ever changing landscape. Her book published in 2001 and titled Napoli vedute immaginarie (Naples, imaginary views), describes her border-journey: every image is a dense rift and a visual incision. Each of them works on time and duration and create a metaphysical realism fed by the vibration of light. In 2006 she started a project focused on ancient city centers called Souvenirs d’Italie, aimed to underline the changes that mass tourism provoked on cities. Large and colored pictures record a crucial gap with the improbable and distorting contrast of the present day.
