IN EXTREMIS VIII

1994

Collezione D’Ercole, Rome

On display from 2009 to 2012 (April)

In the summer of 1994, in Majorca, Barceló began a new series of bodegones (still lifes), titled In Extremis. Drawn in relief and painted on paper eaten by termites, the works in
this series celebrate the consumption of life until its last, extreme transformation. Drawing inspiration from the products on display in the markets, Barceló assembled images of fruit and vegetables in advanced states of decomposition, dramatically straining the domestic and intimate character of still life as a genre. The genre has behind it important masters such as Zurbarán, Chardin, Cézanne and Morandi, capable of verifying the vital resistance of things and their realty in painting. This resistance has now become not so much perceptual as specifically material. The profound influence exerted by his discovery of Africa leads Barceló to vary the Abstract Expressionism of his formative years with the cyclicity of nature, the passing of time. These are themes that the artist, proud of his Mediterranean and Majorcan origin, translates into a dense and lavish pictorial impasto and fragile materials, exposed beforehand to the corrosive action of the elements and chance.
