The design of the geo-political world map (1969) and the discovery of Afghanistan with its ancient culture and craft tradition led Boetti in 1971 to conceive this work, his first Mappa. It began a cycle of works in which the image is not born from the artist's imagination, but from pre-existing facts and actions extraneous to him, like the map of the world and the flags of the nation states. The artist's only “invention” consists in replacing the territories of the individual countries with the patterns of their flags, which vary in their extension or change in the following iconography to reflect the political changes which take place on the international scene. The border has an inscription in capital letters, which reflects Boetti's interest in special numbers like eleven, the memory of Picasso's death (at Mougins, in France on 8 April 1973) and the reference to a broad time span which the work comprises, defying every possible prediction.
