Trained as a sculptor in the early 70s, when Minimalism dominated the art scene, Charles Ray absorbed the spatial, dimensional and proportional lessons of that school, but not its cold abstraction. Instead he centred his interest on the human body and its specific threedimensionality, involving the presence of a subject and a sensitive field of experience (rather than an abstract space). In his photographs, which he began taking when he was at school (like the one here exhibited), Ray makes his own body a sculptural element to all effects. The static quality of his photography conceals the performative nature of his work, in which the body of the artist, bound and clinging to a thin branch, is used to suggest, with the bewildering irony of a Buster Keaton, a confusing sense of danger and horseplay. The formal perfection of the image, combining artistic control of the medium
and personal submission, is used in the service of the happening.
