Rock Head is a smooth oval rock which the artist found in Harlem and to which he attached hair from the floor of a barber's shop in the same district. The barber himself then cut and combed the hair appropriately. The work was prompted by the significance of hair in Afro- American culture and the social importance of the barber's shop. The artist once declared that the Harlem district in New York is as rich in ruins as Rome. Hence the idea, developed in the second half of the seventies, of using stones and found materials
and artefacts to produce his works, which use irony and sarcasm to deal with cultural and race issues. A different version of this work (2005) is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
