A sheet of paper at least a meter long literally covered with marks made by bouncing a basketball off it. Mounted on a rigid support and framed, the sheet of paper is leaned against a wall and has an old suitcase behind it. Hammons began to produce works on the theme of basketball in the early eighties, drawing inspiration from a sport which is an integral part of street culture and in which many young Afro-Americans have distinguished themselves professionally. By bringing the dirt and exuberance of Harlem within the confines of art, Hammons makes it part of his own personal imaginative “baggage”. This leads him to reject media and techniques typical of the artistic tradition and experiment with objects and situations from real life in the ghettos. The result is a minimal grey field like a sky covered with clouds: a homage to the artistic quotient contained in the
unpredictability of life – attuned to the Dada school, but also in contrast with the conventions of Abstract art. A 2001 work from the same series is today in the Albright-Knox
