Ettore Spalletti overriding concern with light is confirmed, in the two diptychs here exhibited, both by the calibrated insertion of other colours to acts as counterpoints to the principal one, and by recourse to a material like alabaster, known also as “lightstone” because of its transparency and brilliancy. The artist returns to materials and supports from the artistic tradition, such as pigment and the canvas stretched and mounted on a wooden frame, or the plinth and alabaster (which had already fascinated the Etruscans in the fourth to fifth centuries B.C., and was then rediscovered in the late sixteenth-century and returned to favour in the seventeenth). So while working in the tradition, Spalletti renews it from within, almost making it unrecognizable. And he achieves this by means of minor details and variations. The results are works that are absolutely innovative and yet rich in memory, as shown by the diptych here exhibited, which brings to mind the philosopher's stone in the engraving by Albrecht Dürer of Melancolia I (1514, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harris Brisbane Dick Fund, New York): a symbol of the first phase of the work in black, or the first step to knowledge.
