From the 1969 solo exhibition at the gallery of Lucio Amelio in Naples to one of the latest paintings in 2008, Robespierre per i napoletani ardenti del 1799, ("Robespierre for the
Neapolitan Revolutionaries of 1799"), the figure of Robespierre appears repeatedly in Ernesto Tatafiore's imagery. As a symbol of the incompatibility between the theoretical
virtue of Enlightenment Reason and the political use of Fear, Robespierre is the icon of an ambiguously contradictory revolution in human ideals and principles of government,
translated directly into the ambiguity of the elements and materials used: drawing on pieces of paper cut out and superimposed to compose not the powerful figure of a hero but the silhouette of a puppet held upright by a thread, despite the display of two large red wings of vitality, which seem to give him the power to fly high above the cube-shaped stage which encloses him.
