Keren Cytter manipulates various film genres, from noir to melodrama, documentary and soap opera. Her works are situated midway between video-art and experimental cinema, in which the protagonist is a humanity on the verge of the absurd, involved in mysterious relationships, often set in kitsch domestic interiors. Her videos subtend elusive, deliberately ambiguous themes, heightened by the non-linear structure of the narratives, amateurish dialogues, and editing and audio which are intentionally arbitrary. Four Seasons is a potpourri of film genres which uses nonsense and a dreamlike atmosphere to express its intrinsic poetry. By reprising movie clichés with special low-fi effects, the video becomes a tribute to the false, the phony, but without offering a precise key to its interpretation. He work has the effect of creating in the viewer a sense of dramatic intensity rather than cynicism and tragicomic irony. In this gratuitousness and redundancy of allusions, the obsessive accumulation of elements devoid of a specific functionality, we find a Baroque afflatus.
