432 Hz

The work of Micol Assaël focuses mainly on space and physical and scientific phenomena. In her installations the centre of interest is principally the viewers themselves, their participation in and subjection to the work, triggering a reaction and unwittingly becoming its subject. The artist intervenes directly on the architecture of the venues of her works, often building from scratch settings for her exhibits which resemble prisons, dominated by a void. This absence of concrete and visible elements is filled with the presence of vibrations, energies invisible to the eye. 432Hz is a wooden structure containing frameworks which look rather like beehives. When the public enter they trigger an electro-acoustic system which diffuses through the space a special sound on a frequency of 432 Hz, produced naturally by the vibration of bees’ wings. This frequency is associated with “Schumann resonance” used to trace the global activity of lightning. Assaël’s para-scientific interests lead back to the idea of the artist-alchemist, as in the seventeenth-century curiositas: a body of knowledge which studied rare phenomena and devised experiments capable of arousing a sense of the marvellous.
