The work of Sislej Xhafa ironically and directly explores universal themes such as human rights, migrations and illegal immigration. He seeks to shock viewers into reflecting on the contradictions in contemporary global society. Moulin Rouge emphasizes the relationship between the mass media and religion and emphasizes how controversial this relationship is, calling to mind the post-Tridentine “Propaganda Fide”. Mbreti dhe mbre teresha (the King and Queen) is a column of wigs in Roi Soleil style, a symbol of seventeenth-century monarchical absolutism and an ironic metaphor of the vertical power that rests on the plebeian base of ants who ensure its survival. Manhole is a realistic ceramic manhole given an incongruently luxurious appearance, a tunnel which metaphorically expresses the separation between the people above and those below.
