Chapman: Hellscapes
Disasters of War III by Jake and Dinos Chapman was created as a contemporary counterpart of the work of Francisco Goya. It is a good example of the two artists’ work, suspended between beauty and suffering, humour and horror, the sublime and the perverse, the childlike and the diabolical. Their Hellscapes are notable for an outrageous hybridization of different artistic languages, styles and contexts, combining features of history, religion and science fiction. The iconographic scheme of the Ascent to Calvary and the Crucifixion is studded with Nazi cruelties. The allegorical representations of the Triumph of Death and the Danse Macabre are combined with Hollywood movie imagery: from the innumerable impaled skulls in Apocalypse Now to the obscene garments sewn from human skin in the Silence of the Lambs. Retrieving a deathly significance from Baroque, the Chapman brothers make heavy use of elements of its formal grammar: its redundancy, doubling, bipolarity, theatricality, its pleasure in artifice, ingenious transgressions, the complexity of the emphasized details, the metamorphosis that turns into mutation.
