MADRE is staging the first one-man show in an Italian museum institution by Thomas Struth, one of the leading exponents of contemporary photography.
The exhibition traces the principal stages of his remarkable career that began in the late Seventies with black and white views of the urban landscape. Using a meticulous and sober photographic technique, Struth recounts the story of the cities and the values of the inhabitants to be found within the diverse architectural forms.
On the occasion of this major exhibition at the MADRE around 60 works will be presented, photos of small, medium and large dimensions, some belonging to the Museum Photographs series, others portraying family groups and urban landscapes. The exhibition also provides an opportunity to see “Paradises”, photos portraying places in which man has never or rarely set foot.
Italian and English editions of the exhibition catalogue will be published by Electa. The catalogue will feature essays by the exhibition curator Mario Codognato, the Curator General of the Madre Museum, and by Prof. Ulrich Baer, Professor of German History and Literature at New York University.
