Con la sua caratteristica gamma cromatica e l'originale e ironico punto di vista, Martin Parr è considerato una delle voci più originali e fresche della fotografia. Parr ha lavorato a molti progetti fotografici che indagano criticamente la società contemporanea e specialmente temi legati al consumismo, al turismo di massa, all'idea stereotipata della famiglia, alle relazioni sociali in genere e al cibo. Le sue immagini satiriche smascherano le fisime dei vari strati della società, che suscitano vergogna, imbarazzo, invidia, cinismo, paura, indignazione, a volte simpatia. Il suo approccio arguto alla fotografia documentaria lascia lo spettatore col dubbio di non sapere se è meglio ridere o piangere. In Common Sense (1995-99), Parr utilizza colori brillanti e primi piani esagerati di motivi come teste, cappelli, mani, cibo e cani che si susseguono dall'inizio alla fine della serie creando un divertente catalogo dei difetti umani.
